The first step is to measure the size of your property length , width and
height . This will enable us to work out the volume of the property that
the energy is used for . At this stage the age and construction will be
noted as well as any tell tale signs of retro cavity filling . Then it's up to
the loft to assess the roof insulation .
We would then look at the boiler making a note of the manufacturer ,
model number and type also detailing the controls eg.. programmer , room
stats and radiators . Bedrooms will be counted including any converted to
studies , playrooms etc..( a 4 bedroom house with one of the bedrooms converted to a study or playroom is still counted as a bedroom for the
purpose of the energy assessment ) with notes on double glazing and
low energy lighting which will be recorded as a percentage of the total
of windows and light fittings .
Downstairs we need to know if your electric meter is single or dual and
again inspect the radiators , lighting , glazing and any heating controls .
Any extensions or conservatories will be recorded separately .
Photographs will be taken of the boiler , meters and structure etc...
This is obviously an abridged version of what we actually do but at least
it will give you an idea as to the process and will usually only take
between 45 mins. to an hour . The work really starts back at the office
collating and preparing the information for your report .
Is there anything I can do before you arrive ?
Yes we will need to know the age of the property and it would
be very helpful if you had any guarantees for work done
extensions , conservatory , double glazing etc.. and it's also useful to
have the boiler documents but don't worry if you can't find them .
As you can see the assessment is not intrusive and the only cupboards
that we need access to are for the boiler and meters .
