Solar power is energy from the sun . In fact, every minute, enough energy arrives at the Earth to meet our demands for a whole year . Solar energy was first used over a 100 years ago from the middle of the industrial revolution. Early solar power plants were built to produce steam to power the machines in our factories.
It was about that time that Henri Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect. The photovoltaic effect is when photo cells convert sunlight directly into electricity .This has been used for a while to power some calculators ,
for example in this country Photovoltaic cells (PV's) are being used as roof tiles. They cover part of the roof of a house and take advantage of the light coming from the Sun. This is trapped by the cell and turned into
electricity.
As well as the fact that energy from the Sun is readily available, there are many other benefits. By locating photovoltaic cells on top of houses , no extra land space is needed and they can also be used in urban areas, where there is plenty of available space. The sun is there so it
makes sense to use it . Solar energy is free , it needs no fuel and produces no waste or pollution .
